Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between anxiety about aging and depression in older adults and to examine whether the meaning in life has a moderating effect on the relationship between the two. The survey was conducted for older adults of over 65 at senior welfare center in Seoul and Gyeonggi. The data from 199 questionnaires were used in the final analysis. As a result, to the old-old, the depression was higher but the meaning in life level was lower than the young-old. And the meaning in life has a moderating effect in the relationship between anxiety about aging and depression in both groups. It explains that the meaning in life is a strong protective factor, which moderates the relationship between anxiety about aging and depression. A high level of the meaning in life reduces the increase of depression even if the anxiety about aging increases, whereas a low level of the meaning in life increases the depression rapidly as the anxiety about aging increases, explaining that the meaning in life is a strong protective factor that can control the relationship. Therefore, this study suggests the different intervention plan in accordance with the characteristics of the young-old and the old-old and raises the need to focus on the meaning in life as a protection factor of negative emotion. It is meaningful that the study proposes the introduction of counseling and welfare programs, and social support services for improving the quality of life, and provides basic data for policy and institutional support.
